The Web’s worst idea: top-level domains, or URL shorteners?

There are only a few top-level domains that makes absolute sense. *.xxx should should be mandatory for adult sites. Governments should be obligated to use *.gov. One day I hope we see an eminent domain model for the Web to reduce the injustices perpetrated on people.

When I’m master of time space and dimension, I will declare the following: All owners of *.com domains shall be entitled to the no-top-level domain resolution.

If someone enters “nickoliva”, you won’t be redirected to a search page, you’ll be taken to the same place that “nickoliva.com” takes you. Any new top-level domain purchases using “nickoliva” will require my approval. All new “*.com” purchases will explain that the “.com” part is optional. This will represent the eventual death of the thousand-registration burden and the many scam artists that profit from it.

The other thing I will rid the world of is URL-shorteners. I haven’t checked in a while, but is Twitter still counting the characters in URLs? Can someone just tell the person that programs that thing to stop counting the characters in the first URL in a post? Go ahead and try to make a case for URL shorteners… they’re indefensible!
